Introduction
============
Hello and welcome to the help section of Jet Set Willy Online, this should hopefully provide a reference manual of sorts to getting the game up and running and allowing you to relive all those wonderful experiences of playing with your willy many years ago, only this time with a crowd of your friends.

You can't say fairer than that, really.

The Manual is divided up into sections for easier navigation. The Introduction Section which you're currently reading through will tell you a bit about the game, the remakers involved in bringing this multiplayer version to life and little else. Nobody said that every section would be useful, did they?

Count yourself lucky we didn't include photo's of ourselves to really torture you.

If you're still paying attention...then skip on to the Jet Set Willy Online section for a full guide on the game and all included modes of play, if you don't fancy reading the rest.

Jet Set Willy Online was coded by Stu C of Ovine By Design and designed by Oddbob, Smila and Scottige.

The Story
=========

Miner Willy, intrepid explorer and nouveau-riche socialite, has been reaping the benefits of his fortunate discovery in surbiton. He has a yacht, a cliff-top mansion, an Italian housekeeper and a French cook, and hundreds of new found friends who REALLY know how to enjoy themselves a a party.

His housekeeper Maria, however, takes a very dim view of all his revelry, and finally after a particularly boisterous thrash she puts her foot down. When the last of the louts disappears down the drive in his Aston Martin, all Willy can think about is crashing out in his four-poster. But Maria won't let him into his room until ALL the discarded glasses and bottles have been cleared away.

Can you help Willy out of his dilemma? He hasn't explored his mansion properly yet (it IS a large place and he HAS been VERY busy) and there are some very strange things going on in the further recesses of the house (I wonder what the last owner WAS doing in his laboratory the night he disappeared).

You should manage O.K. though you will probably find some loonies have been up on the roof and I would check down the road and on the beach if I was you. Luckily, Willy has recently installed a teleport system which enables him to bring his friends in to help whilst Maria's back is turned, so he won't have to clear the mansion up all on his lonesome.

Shame no-one told him about the new extension to his mansion that was going on whilst he was partying... Willy barely had a handle on things before then...

Jet Set Willy Online features all of the rooms from Jet Set Willy and Jet Set Willy II (albeit in slightly modified form for multiplayer purposes) and a whole host of new locations. Willys mansion now stretches to a whopping 255 rooms, with nooks, crannies and all sorts of weirdo's you'd swear weren't there the night before...

Requirements

A Computer (helps), Direct X 8 (minimum) and Port 7002 Incoming unblocked. We also recommend a pair of trousers, although this is entirely optional.

Where It All Began
==================

I started a joke, that had the whole world screaming...

Sometimes, mad idea's have a habit of becoming something far too real. Jet Set Willy Online originally began life as a joke between two people that made it into the hallowed pages of web magazine Way Of The Rodent.

Much to our surprise, a silly joke about what would 8 bit games feel like if they were produced today as Mass Multiplayer Games spiralled out of control, and from some static screenshots...people actually wanted to play Jet Set Willy Online.

Why? Well, its either something in the air or they really are mentalists of the first order. Personally, I believe the latter to be the more likely case. Regardless, things got out of control. There was no game, no intention of it ever being a game, but with so many people with a bee in their bonnet over it, how could you not create one?

Well, if you're Oddbob or Scottige, the answer is - with immense difficulty. A few failed attempts at getting something up and running and it was decided it just wasn't going to happen....until Smila asked Stu of Ovine would he code it... and Stu said yes.

In no time at all, a very sparse beta was sitting there for all to see...and the rest, as they say, is history.

We would also like to thank the beta testers who mucked in along the way, so big thanks to TheCaffeineKid, Minion, GeeKay and Smayds who helped us weed out the worst of the bugs.

Jet Set Willy Online
====================

Jet Set Willy Online is an online version of Software Projects Jet Set Willy, originally released for the ZX Spectrum, featuring all the rooms of the original game, the additional rooms from Jet Set Willy II and a wealth more created by the JSWO team. (Oooh, that almost makes us sound organised!)

You do not require an internet connection in order to play the single player mode of this game, however - obviously, should you wish to get the most out of this game and whap your Willy out for your friends, then you'll need some sort of internets in order to make it happen.

Whilst every attempt has been made to test this game on a wide range of systems and internet connections, as well as to include lag compensation - there's always going to be some poor bugger who can't get it to run right.

Please make sure that your firewall is unblocked and your router configured correctly in order to run this game if necessary. Hopefully, that should be enough to see you through. There is no master server or anything really technical like that, its entirely between you and whoever else has a copy of the JSWO client. Yes, everyone who wants to connect to the game, obviously will need a copy of the game, unless you've found a way of making the internets run on thin air.

If you have found a way to run the internets on thin air, then please, drop us a line with how and we'll be sure to credit you when we start churning the cash in with our revolutionary new online distribution method.

If you have any issues or problems then please, feel free to contact us or drop a note in the thread in the Retro Remakes forums.

The Options Screen
==================

This is where things start to get technical.

When you first load Jet Set Willy Online, you will be asked wether you would like to display the game in fullscreen or windowed mode.

If you wish to run the game in windowed mode: press the n key then ENTER to confirm

If you wish to run the game full screen: press y then ENTER to confirm

After choosing one of these options, you will be presented with the title screen. Simply press Space in order to progress from this screen onto the options screen.

In JSWO, there is a screen full of options. We've decided to call it the Options Screen, but only after we'd been outvoted on calling it Dave.

On the options screen, you can choose from some options. You never expected that, did you?

OK, lets have a look at what the options are:

F1: Set Player Name
===================

In Jet Set Willy Online, its nice to have a name. What that name may be is entirely up to you providing you do it within our incredibly harsh character limit which makes sure your name doesn't mess up our pretty little screen.

Selecting this option allows you to change the name that will be displayed above your Willy in game.

I like to use the name "Zoinks", but your mileage may vary.

F2: Single Player
=================

Are you the kind of person who has no friends? Then this is the mode for you! No internets or friends required.

Yes, wander about the mansion without interruption from anyone other than those weirdo's that inhabit it. Good for getting a feel for the room structure and for sticking your head in the toilet without anyone seeing it.

Not sure where a room is? Go and discover it yourself and gain the upper hand should you grab someone off the street to race them in game!

Want to work out some strategies for avoiding those other pesky Willies or want to find out where all the large hauls of objects are? Man, this is your lucky day - because this mode will help you do just that!

See, we're nice to you. Say "Thank You JSWO Team".

Go on...

We're waiting...

F3: Host Game
=============

If you want people to connect to your game, then you'll have to host a game. That's where pressing F3 comes in.

Yes, selecting Host Game lets you Host A Game. Once you're in and running, providing people know your IP Address they can connect and join to the game. Its like a party at your house, but in someone elses house, and without the party bit...oh, and without the house. Unless you count Willys house, but thats not real.

Obviously, you need to make sure that nothing is blocking people from connecting to your computer, so make sure you allow JSWO access to the internets from your firewall. Or, you'll be left on your lonesome like a poor lonely person.

And you don't want that now do you?

Once you've started hosting a game, you'll be transported to The Gaming Lounge, to lounge around until folks arrive. If they don't turn up, then either something is wrong on your end, their end - or they were lying to you and had no intentions of turning up.

You know its more than likely they were just humouring you - but if they weren't, then check your firewall, check your router, get them to check their firewalls and routers, something will make it work, I'm sure of it.

F4: Connect To Game
===================

In order to connect to a game, you will first need the IP address of the person you're connecting to. There is no master server, it all runs from machine to machine, so there's no technical complimagubbins for you to worry about.

As long as the person you're connected to has chosen to host a game, then you can connect to their JSWO client and join in. And lo, there is mass Willy playing.

In theory, there should be an allowance for around 16 players on one server, your mileage may vary depending on connection speeds etc...

Once you've connected to someones game, you'll find yourself in The Gaming Lounge - whereby you'll have to hang around until the person you've connected to starts a game.

You can of course spend some time jumping on their head whilst you wait, or calling them rude names with the chat function. Its up to you, but if you're making sexual advances please make sure that the other person is comfortable with them first. Its probably not wise to ask your mum her age, sex and location... well, it might be...

F5: Sound Off
=============

This is the Sound on/off option. It turns the pictures off.

No, not that one - it turns the sound on and off, thats it. Okay, its not the most scintillating of options there is, but its kinda handy if like me, there's a wedge of paper between you and the volume control that even attempting to reach could lumber you with a potential A4 sized disaster on your hands.

If the sound option is set to "on" then the F6 key presents you with another menu to choose from.

The default option for "sound on" is to select a music track at random when the game begins. If you wish to amend this F6 cycles through the track options.

The choices are, in order:

random - selects a tune at random

atari_jsw.xm - a nice chippy tune

c64_jsw.xm - the commodore 64 tune

c64_jsw.xm - the second commodore 64 tune

manic.xm - a chip rendition of "In The Halls Of The Mountain King"

msx_jsw.xm - the msx Jet Set Willy tune

pc_jsw.xm - doubtlessly familiar to anyone who's ever played Andy Nobles excellent remake

spec128_jsw.xm - the 128k spectrum tune

spec_jsw.xm - the only true Jet Set Willy tune, the original in all its glory

spec_jsw2.xm - the ingame Jet Set Willy 2 tune

So, yeah - sound on and off. Brilliant, man.

F7: Get Your IP Address
=======================

In case you don't already know your IP address and need it to pass round to folks so that they can connect to your game, pressing F7 will display your IP address.

Fabulous, isn't it? The amount of time and effort we put into the little things to make your life easier. I expect you'll be sending us letters of thank you for this option alone, but thats okay. Just 50 notes will suffice.

F10: Exit
=========

Should you wish to leave the game, hitting F10 will exit from the options screen and emit giant radio waves from your computer that will fry your brain.

Only one part of this is true. I'll let you work out which it is, though.

Choosing Your Character.
========================

Because everyone wants more than one Willy, we've included a large selection in various shapes and sizes for you to choose from. Pick whichever one suits you more.

There's a nice little scrolly thing along the bottom of the options screen with Willies in it. Using left and right you can cycle through the Willies, the currently selected one is the animated Willy that bobs and moves in anticipation of your tender touch.

Don't worry about having the same Willy as someone else, its not appearance that matters, its what you do with it. And besides, ingame - it should have your name on it.

Game Modes and Controls
=======================

There are 7 game modes in JSWO, each with a choice of games within ranging from the old schoolboy favourite of having to touch each others Willies to make them pink, to Capture The Flag whereby you must race your Willy to the opposite side of the map and steal the opponents flag from beneath their dirty little eyes. That'll teach them!

Yes, Capture The Flag JSW Style. You've waited a lifetime for this, haven't you?

The Gaming Lounge
=================

The Gaming Lounge is the first room you encounter upon entering a game.

If you are the host of the game, you will see a menu displaying each of the game types. Once a game is selected, you will be taken to an interim room whereby other players will then have the chance to join the game if they so choose. Once the countdown has completed the game begins.

If you are a player connected to the game, you have to wait until a game is chosen by the host, at which point you will be prompted to press F1 to join. Upon joining the game you are transported to the interim room, "Mission Briefing". Once the countdown has completed the game begins.

You may exit the lounge at any time by pressing ESCAPE to return to the main menu.

F1 - Collect X Items
====================

The first person to collect the specified amount of items is the winner. Upon the game being completed all players are returned to the gaming lounge.

You may choose any of the following amounts from the menu, if you are the host of the game:

Collect 10

Collect 20

Collect 30

Collect 40

Collect 50

Collect 60

Collect 70

Collect 80

Collect 90

Pressing F10 returns you to the gaming lounge, ESCAPE takes you out of the game and onto the main menu.

F2 - Timed Games
================

Timed games involve the players racing to collect the most objects before the countdown runs out. Upon the time counting down to zero, all the players are returned to the gaming lounge and the winner being the player with the most objects collected.

If you are hosting the game, you may choose from any of the following time periods:

5 minutes

10 minutes

15 minutes

20 minutes

25 minutes

30 minutes

35 minutes

40 minutes

45 minutes

Pressing F10 returns you to the gaming lounge, ESCAPE returns you to the main menu.

F3 - Race To Games
==================

Race To Games involve the players racing to a set location on the map. The first person to the set location is declared the winner with all players being returned to the gaming lounge.

The Race To Games are as follows:

Lager Run: First person to The Corner Shop ("Off Licence")

Desert Island Disks: First person to "Desert Isle"

Space Man: First person to "The Rocket Room"

Zootopia: First person to "The Zoo"

If I Were A Rich Man: First person to "Money Bags"

Thirsty Work: First person to "The Drinking Hole"

Power Rangers: First person to "Emergency Generator"

Ummm...errr...: First person to "Lances Bumming Parlour" (Don't ask!)

Pressing F10 returns you to the gaming lounge, ESCAPE returns to the main menu.

We recommend a reasonable knowledge of the map before attempting the racing games, not that its required, of course. It can be quite fun trying to get somewhere by exploration alone.

F4 - Willy Games
================

Willy games are some of the more fun elements to the game. There are two Willy games to choose from:

Willy Tag: All players begin in the same room, the Willy who is "on" is coloured pink and unable to move for a short period of time once the game commences. The pink willy must then catch the other players turning them pink also. The last player to survive is declared the winner and all players returned to the gaming lounge.

Find The Golden Willy: Hidden about the house are a selection of Golden Willies, the Willies with the Midas Touch. The first player to find a Golden Willy is the winner and all the players are returned to the gaming lounge

F7 - Team Collect
=================

Team Collect games allows the players to have a co-op game of Jet Set Willy. Upon starting the game, players are sent to an interim room to choose their teams. Once the teams have been decided, the teams must aim to collect a set amount of objects in game to win. The winning team will be declared when the set amount has been reached, the players will then be returned to the gaming lounge.

The host can choose from:

Collect 10

Collect 20
Collect 30

Collect 40

Collect 50

Collect 60

Collect 70

Collect 80

Collect 90

F8 - Team Timed
===============

Team Timed Games are the equivalent of timed games, but with the players split into teams to work co-operatively in collecting as many objects for their team as possible before the time limit runs out. Once the timer reaches zero, the winning team is declared and all players are returned to the gaming lounge.

The host may choose from the following time limits:

5 minutes

10 minutes

15 minutes

20 minutes

25 minutes

30 minutes

35 minutes

40 minutes

45 minutes

F9 - Willy Teams
================

Willy Team Modes enables you to play a game of "Capture The Flag", each team begins upon opposite sides of the map and must race to the far side before the other team in order to capture the oppositions flag.

Upon collecting the flag, the winner is declared and the players returned to the gaming lounge.

The Controls
============

All players are controlled using the keyboard:

Cursor keys move your player left and right.

Space to jump.

Y to type in the chat window.

In certain modes, you are able to spy on the other players by using the S key to switch to spy mode and the up and down cursors to move between players. Be aware that whilst in Spy mode, you are still vulnerable to the enemies.

Pressing ESCAPE in game at any point will return
